As personal injury attorneys — and life-long motorcycle enthusiasts ourselves — we understand the thrill of the open road. But we also know the devastating consequences that reckless driving can have on innocent lives. That is why we strongly support Connecticut’s new legislation, which became effective on October 1, 2025. This legislation imposes significantly tougher penalties for street takeovers, illegal racing, excessive reckless driving, the wearing of helmets for younger adults, and new e-bike regulations. These changes send a clear message that dangerous behavior behind the wheel will no longer be tolerated and the safety of riders is paramount. Under the new law: Participants in street takeovers or illegal races face fines up to $2,000 and a two-year license suspension for repeat offenses. Municipalities are now authorized to destroy seized ATVs and dirt bikes after 90 days. Motorists caught driving over 100 mph face harsher penalties including fines up to $1,000 and nearly a year of imprisonment for repeat violations. Connecticut now requires helmets for motorcycle riders and passengers under 21 (up from 18). Kids under 18 must wear helmets on bikes, scooters, and skateboards — previously only required under age 16. The state also reclassifies certain high-powered, pedal-less e-bikes as motor-driven cycles. These now require a driver’s license but don’t need registration. Michael D’Amico, founding partner of our firm, shared his perspective, “We love the freedom of riding, especially as motorcyclists. But, after 35 years of representing victims of serious accidents, we know how devastating reckless driving can be. We have seen too often the devastating effects of reckless drivers on our roads and the terrible injuries they can inflict upon the innocent drivers around them. We particularly applaud the stricter rules regarding excessive reckless driving, which can cause particularly devastating injuries and death.” D’Amico Pettinicchi believes these measures will help protect all road users, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and drivers alike by curbing the kind of behavior that turns joyrides into tragedies. Enforcement matters, but so does awareness. We encourage all Connecticut motorists to respect the law, slow down, and share the road responsibly. If you or a loved one has been injured due to reckless driving, our team is ready to fight the good fight. Justice starts with accountability — and we are proud to stand behind laws that prioritize safety for everyone. "},{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"BreadcrumbList
@type":"ListItem
{"@type":"ListItem
Riding Responsibly: Applauding Connecticut’s Tougher Penalties for Reckless Driving, Use of Helmets, and e-Bike Regulations
https://damicopettinicchi.com/blog/connecticut-reckless-driving-law-2025/#breadcrumbitem"}]}]
